Serbia Concludes Snap Election as Turnout Rises Amid Irregularity Reports

(MENAFN) Polling stations across Serbia closed at 8 p.m. local time on Sunday, concluding snap parliamentary elections that saw strong voter participation alongside reports of possible voting irregularities.

Turnout stood at 67.6% by 7 p.m., according to estimates from polling agency Ipsos and the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID).

The provisional figure exceeded the final turnout of 58.77% recorded during the previous parliamentary elections in December 2023 by 8.83 percentage points, indicating a notable rise in electoral participation.

However, the latest turnout estimate is not final, with the official figure expected once vote counting has been completed.

Initial preliminary election results are anticipated before midnight.

Approximately 6.45 million registered voters were eligible to participate, with 18 electoral lists competing for seats in Serbia's 250-member National Assembly.

Serbian electoral legislation requires the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) to issue a consolidated results report within 96 hours after receiving summary reports from all polling stations.

Political lists must obtain at least 3% of the vote to enter parliament. Lists representing national minorities, however, are exempt from this minimum threshold.
