Kozarev Confers with Ambassador of Paraguay

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Dušan Kozarev met today with Ambassador of the Republic of Paraguay to Serbia, non-resident and based in Rome, María José Argaña Mateu, following her presentation of credentials to President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić earlier today.

Welcoming Ambassador Argaña Mateu, Kozarev wished her every success in her mandate and expressed his confidence that her diplomatic engagement would contribute to the further advancement of bilateral relations.

The interlocutors noted the long-standing history of good relations between Serbia and Paraguay, founded on openness, cooperation on an equal footing, and respect for international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening these relations.

The interlocutors exchanged views on the importance of fostering closer economic ties between the two countries, particularly in the context of the effects of the free trade agreement between MERCOSUR and the European Union, as well as on opportunities for Serbia and Paraguay to strengthen their respective presence in the markets of Latin America and Europe. They also discussed the potential for intensifying cooperation in the fields of culture, interparliamentary relations, security and defence. Particular attention was devoted to opportunities for knowledge transfer and cooperation in advanced technologies, data centre development and digital services.

Ambassador Argaña Mateu welcomed Serbia’s active engagement in Latin America and its efforts to further deepen cooperation with the countries of the region.

Kozarev conveyed Serbia’s deep appreciation for Paraguay’s principled position and its continued non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called “Kosovo,” as well as for its support for Serbia in international organisations, emphasising that this is an issue of the highest national and state importance. He briefed his interlocutor on the difficult situation faced by Serbs and the threats to Serbian Christian cultural heritage in Serbia’s southern province.

Kozarev reiterated President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić’s invitation to Paraguay to participate in the Specialised Expo 2027 in Belgrade, noting that the event would provide an opportunity to showcase Paraguay’s rich culture and development potential to the Serbian and international public.
