Slovak President Urges Peace Talks in Ukraine

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini voiced his country’s support for resolving the war in Ukraine through dialogue, welcoming Donald Trump’s participation in the peace process and expressing optimism that 2026 could mark the beginning of lasting peace.

During a joint press conference in Belgrade with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Pellegrini cautioned that the European Union’s ongoing postponements in its enlargement agenda risk undermining confidence in the Western Balkans.

“The European Union is gambling with the trust of Western Balkan citizens,” Pellegrini remarked, stressing that delaying the opening of EU negotiation clusters for Serbia amounts to “a political game by some member states.”

He emphasized that Slovakia rejects the imposition of new political conditions on Serbia’s accession path, insisting that Belgrade deserves EU membership if it fulfills the established requirements. In his view, progress should be judged on merit rather than political maneuvering.

Pellegrini further warned that extended delays could push regional populations to lose faith in the European project altogether, a shift he argued would damage the EU’s credibility and long-term security.

Turning to the Ukraine conflict, he reaffirmed Slovakia’s stance that the war must be settled at the negotiating table rather than through continued fighting.
